Velež Vertical — a race to Ćaba, where the mountain shows its true face

There are races that are measured by time, placement, and results. And there are those that are remembered for the moment when a person stops, looks back, and realizes how high they have climbed. Velež Vertical, one of the most unique challenges of the Nevesinjska olimpijada, belongs to that second category.

This mountain race takes competitors from the foot of Velež to the peak of Ćaba, through a trail that combines sport, nature, effort, and a view that is hard to forget. Velež is the highest mountain in the Nevesinje municipality, and its highest peak, Botin, reaches 1,969 meters above sea level. The name of the mountain is believed to derive from Veles, the ancient Slavic god of the earth, water, the underworld, cattle, and wealth — which gives this mountain an additional mythical and symbolic depth.

From a Calm Beginning to a Stony Gaze

Velež Vertikal begins at the foot of the mountain, seemingly calm. The first part of the trail leads with a gentle ascent, enough for the competitor to catch a rhythm and think that the mountain can be easily read. But this introduction lasts only a short time. Soon comes the entrance into the forest, where the view closes, breath becomes shorter, and every step begins to demand more strength.

The real drama of the trail begins when one exits the forest. Exactly somewhere in the middle of the ascent, when the competitor looks back, a scene suddenly unfolds before them that stops thought: Nevesinjsko polje, the Crvnja massif, and Lake Alagovac remain deep below, in a width that shows how much height has already been conquered.

Until that moment, a person often has no idea how high they have climbed. Only the backward glance reveals that half of the trail is already behind them — but also that the real challenge is just beginning.

The Same Mountain, a New Challenge

Velež is more than a geographical term for Nevesinje. It is a landmark, a boundary, a guardian of the fields, and a space around which stories, memories, and a sense of belonging are woven. Its slopes remember shepherds, hikers, hunters, excursionists, and all those who have ventured towards the peaks out of necessity, habit, curiosity, or respect.

Today, Velež Vertikal gives a modern form to that old bond between man and mountain. Instead of a long mountain walk, there is a race. Instead of a simple ascent to the peak, there is a goal. But the feeling remains the same — the mountain is conquered not just with the legs, but also with the mind, breath, and will.

After exiting the forest, the trail transitions into the Herzegovinian barren land. The view no longer disappears. It follows the competitor towards the summit, while the stone, grass, sun, and altitude create an ambiance in which every meter feels stronger. Just before the finish, everything may seem almost calm, as the terrain's configuration often shields the gusts of wind and creates a deceptive sense of silence.

And then comes the emergence onto Ćaba.

At the finish, the wind rose reveals the true harshness of Velež. What appeared distant from the base, and occasionally calm on the trail, is revealed at the top as an open space of wind, height, and strength. Here, the race ceases to be just a sports result and becomes an experience of the mountain.
