Aleksa Kovačević was one of the best shot putters in what was then Yugoslavia. He represented Yugoslavia at the 1936 Olympic Games, and in the 1930s, he won four consecutive titles of Yugoslav champion in shot put, from 1934 to 1937.

He is the author of the works "Nevesinjska puška", "Who is the Slanderer of Jovan Dučić", and the collection "Songs to the Homeland". His poem "Homeland" holds a special place, in which a strong attachment to his homeland, people, and sense of belonging is felt.
