Among the disciplines that hold a special place in the program of the Nevesinjska olimpijada is chess — a game where victory is not achieved through strength, but through concentration, patience, tactics, and calm decision-making at the right moment.
As part of the 151st Nevesinjska olimpijada, on Friday, August 7, at the "Tara" Restaurant, the Open Individual Chess Championship will be held. The tournament starts at 10:30 AM, and participation is expected from chess players in the region, from experienced masters to young talents and enthusiasts of this ancient game.
The competition will be played using the Swiss system in seven rounds, with a time control of 10 minutes per player. Such a format brings fast, dynamic, and uncertain games, where every move can decide the outcome of the match. Participants are required to bring their own chess set and a functioning chess clock.

The story of chess under Velež has deep roots. Even in the 1980s, chess was very popular in Nevesinje, and the organization of the Youth Championship of Yugoslavia showed that the Chess Club "Nevesinje" has the strength and knowledge to host major sporting events.
It was from such an atmosphere that the idea emerged for chess to have its permanent place in the program of the Nevesinjska olimpijada. From then until today, the 64 black and white squares have become part of the Olympic tradition, and the chess tournament has grown into a recognizable gathering of players from different generations.
The special beauty of this tournament lies in the fact that at the same board, experienced grandmasters, international masters, young talents, and amateurs can be found. They differ in age, experience, and titles, but they are united by the same — love for chess and respect for the Olympic spirit of Nevesinje.

The chess tournament of the Nevesinjska olimpijada over the years has gathered many great names. The most success in this competition has been achieved by grandmaster Slaviša Brenjo, as well as international masters Srđan Benderać, Vitomir Arapović, and Atif Dumpor.
