Horse Races — Nevesinjska olimpijada 2026

Old horse races at the Nevesinjska olimpijada

The horse races at Bratački lug represent one of the strongest symbols of the Nevesinjska olimpijada and an event that gathers riders, breeders, and a large number of visitors every year. As part of the 151st edition of the event, this tradition once again brings together a blend of sporting competition, history, chivalry, and the special atmosphere for which Nevesinje is remembered.

This year, just like the previous 150 times, Bratački lug near Nevesinje becomes the stage for one of the oldest and most recognizable moments of the Nevesinje Olympics — the traditional horse races. As the highlight of the 151st edition of the event, the races will once again gather riders, breeders, and thousands of visitors coming from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region just to witness this spectacle.
The horse races are held in three categories, each with its own track and rules: thoroughbred horses run two laps of the track, Arabian horses run one and a half laps, while Bosnian-Herzegovinian mountain horses and mixed breeds run one lap, which is between 900 and 1,000 meters long. The organizers invite all interested owners and riders to follow announcements regarding registrations and the schedule.

The Same Field, Different Times

If one of the travel writers who recorded the first news about the Nevesinje races in 1886 were to stand at the edge of Bratački Lug today, the sight would, surprisingly, be familiar to them. The same field, the same plateau surrounded by Velež and Crvnje, the same tension at the moment the horses take off from the start. Almost everything around it has changed — once wooden pavilions have given way to stands and sound systems, horses are now microchipped, and expert committees check the lineage of each horse — but the image itself, of a horse galloping across the Nevesinje plain while thousands of eyes watch from the edge of the track, has remained unchanged for 140 years. This may be the greatest value of these races: while modern sports change from year to year, Bratački Lug still offers the same, almost ancient sight of the competition between man, horse, and open field — only this year's generation of riders is here to continue the story that their great-grandfathers began.

Did you know?
The first preserved poster announcing horse races in Nevesinje — kept in the archive of the Church Municipality of Nevesinje — dates back to 1891. However, the tradition has not always been continuous: races were not held from 1912 to the mid-twenties of the last century, then from 1940 to 1952, and the last major interruption was from 1990 to 1994.
Yet, even in 1994, amidst the war events, the people of Nevesinje decided to organize horse races — thanks to friends from Šabac who wanted to provide the freedom-loving town of Herzegovina with at least a moment of respite in difficult times. Just like in ancient Greece, where wars ceased during the Olympic Games, messages of peace were sent from Bratački lug during those years.
